Jodorowsky's Dune

In 1975, Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky, whose films EL TOPO and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN launched and ultimately defined the midnight movie phenomenon, began work on his most ambitious project yet. Starring his own 12 year old son Brontis alongside Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, David Carradine and Salvador Dali, featuring music by Pink Floyd and art by some of the most provocative talents of the era, including HR Giger and Jean 'Moebius' Giraud, Jodorowsky's adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel DUNE was poised to change cinema forever.

The film that never was in 1975, “Thank goodness”.

In every field of art, one needs to start with the classics. Learn to construct and produce classics better than classicists. Then, when the time comes, one will have to leap into the unknown to create what is in us that has never been expressed, but we know down deep it is a part of us. Then there are those people who take shortcuts and never learn the classics, so when it is their time to go off the deep end, we get trash posing as art. This is a documentary of one of those easy way-out people. I have taken the time to watch some of Jodorowsky's films that came to be, and a pretty much glad that this critter never made it. I accidentally picked up a copy of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain” while looking for a Leni Riefenstahl film. Still, this is a useful presentation to let us know what we have almost got. Different presenters suggest that if this had beaten “Star Wars” to the theater, the world of sci-fi would be different today. Be prepared to do a lot of subtitle reading unless you are multilingual. It helps to know the story first; they tell their own version. It is worth seeing what they had in mind and why. Anyhow, we watch the making of a near miss.

Like most fans of the novel Dune, I await with great anticipation the forthcoming film version directed by Denis Villeneuve, which had me thinking of its previous adaptations. Despite its place as one of the most popular science fiction books of all time, its previous journeys to the screen have not lived up to the book’s hype…
