The fascinating topic of Job's quest raises the obvious question - what is that quest? Is it Job's desire to counter once and for all the claims of his "friends" that he is a wretched sinner? Is it his wish to have his complaints heard in a divine court of law where he feels sure of his vindication? Is it his aim to be accepted honorably once more into the community? These elements, and perhaps several others, are clearly involved. But do they constitute the essence of the quest? This study shows convincingly that the underlying structure of the book points in another direction. The chiastic structure focuses on Job 28 as the centerpiece around which the whole book is framed - the hymn to divine wisdom. The preceding part of the book deals with the quest for answers based on human thought, conversation, and reason. The subsequent part of the book focuses mainly, by sharp contrast, on divine revelation as essential to providing abiding answers and perspective to the human condition.
