Here's an excellent arts management primer!

Jobs in Arts and Media Management provides a wonderful overview of the arts management profession. Included in the book are 1) definitions and vocabulary used in the industry, 2) practical career advice for aspiring arts managers, 3) resources for further information and contact, 4) structures of both for-profit and non-profit arts organizations, 5) various types of arts organizations (visual, performing, media), 6) typical categories of positions available in the field, 7) how to be an independent arts management consultant, and 8) forecasting the future for arts managers. Twenty-five years ago, when I was hired to direct my first art center, arts management was not yet a recognized academic program of study. It was that year that the Association of Arts Administration Educators (AAAE) was formed. Today, AAAE boasts over 35 domestic and international institutional members (colleges and universities). Over 80 other higher education programs in arts management exist across the U.S. How I wish that I had access to them as I pursued my education! In today's competitive marketplace, arts organizations are increasingly searching for managers who have been prepared in theory and practice. A combination of life or academic experience as a practicing artist, plus strong communication, technology, research, interpersonal, development, and business skills are now required for successful arts management. This book covers the breadth of possibilities available to those who aspire to combine and apply a passion for the arts with sound business management. This is a no-nonsense, articulate, and useful "how-to" book. I am hopeful that there is a revised edition in the works that positions prospective arts managers for the 21st century!
