This is a story of the life and times of a fireman in Torridge City in the 1960s (Torridge City, a factional place, closely resembling a major city in the North of England). This book tells the initial story of his first year in the service, his initial basic training whilst on active duty on fire stations before found suitable and posted for his twelve weeks at the training school. This is the story of men on the front line. Men getting their hands dirty saving lives and property. Michael also describes rituals he had to undertake before acceptance. Firemen in those days were poorly paid and considered an embarrassment unless required to deal with incidents. As a probationer, there are fires and other emergencies in which he took part including his first Christmas Day on duty and the culinary delights created in the kitchen only to be rudely interrupted by turn outs. Michael experiences first-hand death and destruction in this his first year of service.
