Jessie is the eponymous (big word!) hero of the story, a feisty 12-year-old, clever and sporty.

Jessie's reclusive gran dies, leaving her country cottage to Jessie's family along with a nice wedge of money.

Jessie discovers the cottage is linked to a mysterious flying thing the locals call 'The Firefly' that has been appearing on and off for centuries but came to prominence during WW2 when it saved many allied pilots but accidentally downed an American bomber. The US air force has been hunting it ever since.

The Firefly is, in fact, an alien super-powered suit, lost on Earth after their craft was damaged and crashed, killing almost everyone on board, except two survivors, more than 12,000 years ago. The huge creature that caused the crash also survived and seeks the power source that allowed the aliens to travel through wormholes and time and space.

Jessie meets one of the aliens who survived the crash, who turns out to be the man who adopted her gran during WW2. He amazes Jessie by telling her that she is chosen to become the next Firefly and inherit all its powers.

Jessie discovers the US air force has an enormous stockpile of nuclear weapons hidden under their base. The giant space monster also finds this out and threatens to destroy Norfolk and half of Western Europe by detonating the stockpile unless he is given the suit and its power source.

Cue a desperate fight to destroy the monster, and prevent a US B1 bomber from destroying Moscow, which would start WW3.

Jessie finally makes the ultimate sacrifice to prevent any other of the giant monsters from coming to Earth again looking for the suit.
