JESUS WILL LISTEN TO MY STORIES: Over a hundred stories about my West Virginia start as a coal miner’s orphan to retirement as a UMC pastor. ... Ohio ... Ohio UMC Pastor--Rev Jerry D. Butcher, Ph.D.)
In short, poignant, often humorous stories, Dr. Butcher describes his life. He was born in a West Virginia coal mining town during the depths of the depression. When he was six, his father was killed in a mine collapse. His mother died two years later. An older sister, then 15, raised her three brothers ages 10, 8, and 6 on a coal miner's pension and money the boys earned selling newspapers. He graduated from high school, college, divinity school, and obtained a Ph.D. from Case Western University in Ohio. His two brothers also had successful careers. After he married his college sweetheart, they had a daughter and three boys while pastoring churches throughout Northeastern Ohio. His stories encompass fly-fishing experiences, pulpit exchanges in England, travels to Israel, participation in an archeology dig, Biblical study insights, playing tennis from midlife through mid-eighties, his 43 years serving United Methodist churches, marriage, family life in a parsonage, retirement, and contemplation of the Beyond.
