This book was published in 1982, so the color may not be as bright or sharp as it could be. Also, I am bias against Carl Bloch, probably my favorite painter. With those preliminaries, I give this book five stars. I admit, it could do with a new edition, enlarged, but as far as I know, it is the only 'Carl Bloch' accessible book of art out there. This book though focuses on the life of Jesus Christ, as most of Bloch's paintings were from stories of the New Testament. Overall, beautiful for its age, and worth it even as a moderate Bloch fan and picky about the age of the publishing.
Large Collection of Paintings of the Life of Jesus Christ
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
Bloch was a 19th century Danish painter who created a series of 23 paintings of the life of Christ comissioned by the Danish King. The original collection is in a museum in a castle in Denmark. These paintings are what you would expect from the 19th century in style: romantic and formal. Jesus is represented as being very Northern European in looks. However, it is a beautiful collection and, in its details, seems to get Christian theology right. Perhaps its greatest charm is in its completeness. All major events in the life of Christ are represented. The paintings come out beautifully in the book. It does split some of them up to display details. This can be either good or bad depending on one's point of view.
