Book Overview

Written to Supplement the Proclamation Commentaries volumes, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, this book not only enables the reader to get a better grasp of the similarities and differences in the christological pictures of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, but - by taking into account the scholarly discussion of the sayings-source Q - it also broadens the scope of the entire series.

Short and Useful

Jack Kingsbury here presents a volume which traces common themes found in the three synoptic gospels as well as in the Q source. In general the chapter structures are well laid out, I appreciate the parallel exploration of themes in the various Gospels, and the fleshing out of how they intersect and where their messages diverge. I admit that I was a little bothered by the heavy emphasis placed upon Q. I realize the theory of Q is widely accepted, however I find some mental exercises such as trying to reconstruct it from pieces of other gospels, to be somewhat specious. I think Kingsbury treats Q well, but perhaps too well, basing conclusions on hypotheses which are tenuous at times. In general this is a nice reference book to have when diving into a deeper exploration of the synoptic gospels.
