A must for historical fiction fans

Goodman's extensive research of the period lends the ring of authenticity to a gripping narrative. The reader is led gently into the period while pursuing the story of a girl determined to mold her own future. Young readers will realize how difficult it was for their great-grandmothers to achieve a dream beyond marriage and childcare -- something they take for granted. Jess is an unforgettable character. I lent the book to friends and relatives, and their mutual comment was: "When will the sequel come out?"

Goodman Does A Great Job

I loved reading Jess. Goodman makes history fascinating and fun. She has extensive knowledge of the 19th century. I especially enjoyed learning about the medical practices of that time. She brings the young girl Jess to life with scenes that made me cry and some that made me laugh out loud. I highly recommend this book. It is one of my favorites.
