After the Second World War and the rebirth of the State of Israel Dutch-born Reinie makes aliyah. In Israel she becomes Yardena and marries the artist Nathan whose background is Sephardic. The couple has eight children whom they try to raise in an atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect. As the story of Yardena's life develops, neighbors, guests, relatives and occasional passers-by discuss ordinary and extra-ordinary events with typical Israeli passion. The children grow up and acquire their individual political and religious convictions. Boys and girls have to serve in the army and react differently. A daughter joins a secular kibbutz. Her sister becomes ultra-orthodox and can no longer shake a man's hand. Two sons make a trip around the world and befriend a Palestinian.
