Jerusalem in His Eyes: Conversations with Mahmoud Shukair

By Jamal Assadi

"This book offers a distinctive study that intertwines creativity with the cultural fabric of Palestine through the life and literary career of the renowned pioneer and trailblazing writer, Mahmoud Shukair. Written with both clarity and scholarly discipline, it reconstructs Jerusalem's literary landscape in its human and aesthetic dimensions, revealing how literature reinforces collective consciousness and restores place within cultural memory."- Prof. Hussain Hamzah, Arabic Department, The Arab Academic College for Education, Haifa

"This book offers a profound literary and human portrait of the Jerusalem writer Mahmoud Shukair. Combining critical precision with poetic insight, the author turns conversation into a form of aesthetic and historical inquiry, revealing how writing itself becomes an act of endurance and resistance against erasure and forgetting"- Prof. Khalid Sindawi, The Arabic Academic College for Education in Haifa

Jerusalem in His Eyes is an intimate portrait of Mahmoud Shukair in conversation with Jamal Assadi. From Jabal al-Mukabbir to exile and return, a life is traced in precise, humane scenes. Stories become resilience; craft becomes an ethics of form and memory. He speaks of childhood, prisons, translation, and writing for the young-without sermon, with grace. Assadi's commentary situates the voice within Arab and world letters. Together they build an "artistic reality parallel to the raw real," where a city breathes on the page. A luminous guide for readers of literature, history, and Jerusalem itself.
