This is a book to help children see how important it is to eat fruits and  vegetables. If a lion can give up eating meat, something that is in their nature to do, and conform to something more healthy. Not only did Jerome the lion conform  to  eating  fruits  and  vegetables, but   he was  trying  to  get  his  whole family  to  do  so  and  eventually  all the rest  of  his  forest friends. That was his idea. How he would do it was a bit of a puzzle  to  him, for he was still hiding it from the other animals  in the forest; but eventually,  he got his chance to come clean  to  his  children.
