Jennifer Beals was born on December 19, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up on the South Side of the city as the daughter of Jeanne (n e Anderson), an elementary school teacher, and Alfred Beals, who owned grocery stores. Her father was African-American, and her mother is Irish-American, making Beals biracial-a fact that deeply influenced her sense of identity and perspective on life. She often felt like an outsider during her youth, describing herself as "the other in society." Beals's father passed away when she was just nine years old, after which she spent a summer at Cheley Colorado Camps in Estes Park, Colorado.
Her early exposure to the arts began at age 13 when she worked at an ice cream store, using her height (5'8") to convince her boss she was older than she actually was. Two pivotal moments shaped her decision to pursue acting: participating in her high school's production of Fiddler on the Roof and witnessing Joan Allen's performance in Balm in Gilead while volunteer-ushering at the Steppenwolf Theatre.
