Jason DeFord, better known to millions of fans as Jelly Roll, came into this world on December 4, 1984, in Nashville, Tennessee. Born into a working-class family, his roots run deep in the soil of America's music capital, though his early years would hardly suggest the musical success story that would eventually unfold. His father worked various blue-collar jobs to keep food on the table, while his mother struggled with her own personal demons, including substance abuse issues that would later inform much of Jelly Roll's music and perspective on life.

The DeFord household wasn't exactly the picture of stability. Growing up, Jelly Roll witnessed firsthand the struggles of addiction, financial hardship, and the complexities of family dysfunction. These experiences, painful as they were, would eventually become the raw material that he would transform into brutally honest lyrics that connected with people who recognized their own struggles in his words. Though his stage name might suggest otherwise, there was nothing soft about his upbringing. The name "Jelly Roll" itself has its origins in Southern slang, a reference he adopted later in life that stuck with him throughout his career. It's a moniker that belies the hardened reality of his formative years.
