a child-sized dose of history

Trish Marx's readable biography of Jeannette Rankin is a perfectly rendered child-sized dose of American political history. Written in accessible blank verse, it tells the story of Rankin's courageous career as a campaigner against war and for the rights of women and children. The book's seven chapters chronicle the childhood, young womanhood, early political career, private life and later life achievements of Rankin, a woman whose spirit will appeal to modern young readers. Dan Andreasen's sepia-toned drawings, alternating with softly rendered paintings, bring a warm period feel to the book. The text would make for a good read-aloud in a classroom setting, or the subject of biography book reports. Exceptionally well-done.
