Jasper Thorn

By Maurice Egan

Raised in New York City by wealthy parents, Jasper Thorn has had a very pleasant life. In addition to being the only son of loving parents, he is the favorite of his father's rich sister, Aunt Katherine. Everything changes, however, when his father goes on business to Cuba. On the homeward voyage, his father is swept overboard, and on the same day Jasper and his mother hear of his death, they also learn that they have lost all their wealth in a stock market crash.

After selling nearly everything - including Jasper's beloved horse, Corsair - to pay their debts, Jasper and his mother move into a tenement house. All his former acquaintances have abandoned him, and he is thrown among rough boys used to fending for themselves at the expense of others. In these dire circumstances, Jasper finds that to live as a Catholic requires courage and effort.
