Have you ever seen something out of the corner of your eye, a flicker of movement that wasn't there when you turned your head to look at it directly? If so, you've probably had an encounter with a Ses! The Ses are not fairies, pixies or gnomes but are of similar size and so are often mistaken for them on the rare occasions when seen by us humans. One of these Ses is a giraffe Ses (all is explained in the book!) called Jaspa. Jaspa has reached the age where he must undertake a Journey, a Ses rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. This story is about the adventures he has, and the diverse and occasionally rowdy group of friends he makes, whilst on this journey. Whilst this book may have the look and feel of a children's tale, this story will charm and delight lovers of whimsy of all ages. The characters are well defined, and the locations they visit during their adventures are real world locations that are authentically and vividly described with an exacting eye for detail that lends a touch of reality to the world of the Ses. The dramas and challenges the protagonists face are delightfully (and vividly) brought to life with them facing just enough risk to engender a sense of peril, to without losing the delightful, heart-warming underlying sense of whimsy. Overall, this is a fantastic first novel by Mr Meyrick and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you are a fan of the gentle drama of the "no 1 ladies detective agency" novels, or if the adventure, wonder and innocence of the early Harry Potter novels appeals then this book is for you!
