A great introduction to Japanese textiles!

If I could recommend only one reference on Japanese textiles and historical clothing, I might very well pick this one. Within its limits as one of a multi-volume survey on Japanese arts, it provides an excellent overview of the historical developments of clothing and textile decoration in Japan, particularly before the Edo period. A great place to start.
