The city of Janus is located in central Ohio on the banks of the Nottingham River. Its northwestern tip is known locally as Hell's Corner, notorious for a history of unexplained events, including mysterious deaths and disappearances. It had been left largely untouched for decades, a collection of old buildings that housed much of the city's minority population until influential developer Emanuel Escuela's company, Escuela Properties, contracted with the city to buy up the existing structures and redevelop the area into an upscale residential, recreational, and business community. The residents of Hell's Corner were relocated and their homes razed and replaced by Escuela Commons, the highlight of which were twin luxury residential high-rises known as Escuela Towers One and Two. What came to be learned was that the atmosphere of Hell's Corner had affected the original residents by instilling in them a sense of belonging to the area, tangible evidence that life was bigger than what they'd been exposed to in their lifetimes. Something awaited them on the other side of the cosmic doorway that they believed would lift them above their lowly stations in life. For the new, well-to-do tenants of recently constructed Escuela Tower One, moving into their new, high-priced apartments began a string of unsettling events that intruded into the structured flow of their lives and threatened everything they knew and believed, something they couldn't control or shut out. Like the displaced residents of Hell's Corner they were affected by forces beyond their understanding, forces real and unpredictable, the epitome of terror and a thief of hope and the normalcy they'd previously known. When investigative reporter Nick Giordano came to Janus and discovered that the son of the developer of Escuela Commons had been found dead in his penthouse apartment, he saw the potential for a story. Aided by his cousin, Fiona, Nick learned of the strange history of Hell's Corner and came to suspect that Escuela Properties was working in collusion with the Janus town leadership and the federal government to hide the facts surrounding the deaths and other unexplained phenomena taking place there. What Nick ultimately uncovered was that Hell's Corner had become the focal point for a scientific experiment that placed the lives of everyone living in Janus at risk, leaving it up to Nick and Fiona to expose the truth while placing themselves into the middle of events never before experienced on Earth.
