Jane Haskell: Drawing In Light surveys Haskell's career. Originally from New York, Jane Haskell (1923-2013) was an artist and a philanthropist who made Pittsburgh her home for nearly fifty years. Authors Vicky A. Clark and Melissa Hiller focus their insightful examination on Haskell's sculpture, painting and drawing in which the emphasis on light is key. Their essay covers substantial ground about Haskell's work, her sensibilities and influences, and her position within the schema of twentieth-century art and artists. Haskell retained an affinity for painting throughout her career, yet she also mined the physical, experiential and phenomenal qualities of light by making sculptures and installations. Drawing upon her distinct approach to co-mingling physical light with painting, the project's title references a series of fluorescent light installations she completed in 1998. It was her mentor Samuel Rosenberg, Pittsburgh's inveterate painter of light and one of Andy Warhol's college professors, who first prompted her exploration of the qualities of painting and translucence. She was informed by the French Impressionists' examination of the principles of illumination and reflection, and Abstract Expressionism's compositions dominated by fields of color. She shared the minimalist's less-is-more ethos, which profoundly guided her consideration of artmaking and light. Ever the Rosenberg prot?g?, Haskell's mantra was without light there is no life.Observations by Haskell's friends, family and artworld colleagues add a personal dimension. The honest, perceptive comments about who she was and what she stood for contextualize this iconic and beloved artworld figure.Jane Haskell: Drawing In Light is the first-ever in depth examination of Haskell's work and includes an introduction by her longtime friend and colleague Richard Armstrong, Director, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, a biographical sketch by American Jewish Museum Director Melissa Hiller, and an essay by Hiller and art historian Vicky A. Clark, PhD.187 pages with over 100 color illustrations.
