A survey of New Testament writings reveals almost as much about the authors as it does the subject about which they write. Luke, a physician, reveals a great attention to detail as he pens the gospel bearing his name. His attention to people places and events gives insight into the early spread of Christianity as he records those details in the Book of Acts. John's youth and enthusiasm are on full display in his gospel. He shows a side of our Savior that others do not know as the one affectionately known as "the Beloved." John's maturity and absolute love for his Savior are exhibited on every page of "The Revelation of Jesus Christ." The Apostle Paul was perhaps the most zealous of all the New Testament writers. His analytical mind dictated he write the great doctrinal thesis we call the book of Romans. His missionary zeal is on full display as he writes to the churches he helped birth and his love for pastors may be why we are left with I and II Timothy. James was more practical than all the others. You will find glimpses of doctrine in his letter, but you are more likely to be struck by his practicality. He writes of proper conduct and a healthy view of finances. He talks about getting along with one another and how to live in a world where others do not share your deep convictions. He gives great insight on how to pray effectively and comfort brothers and sisters in distress. James indeed is a practical man in a world of pious platitudes his practical teaching is a welcome alternative.
