Jakob Unger was born in 1894 in Southern Russia and was witness to the fall of Imperial Russia and the Bolshevik Revolution. As a Mennonite and pacifist, he moved ever further east within Russia trying to avoid and stay ahead of the chaos arising from the regime change. In the end, he and other Mennonites felt compelled to leave Russia. The flight to freedom for Jakob and his family began as they stole across the frozen Amur River into China and ends in Paraguay. These are his stories.
