Mari Kaye's fictional and history based novel 'Jacobie's Wake' is set during the Cold War years from 1953 - 2000. Ken Jacobie has been corrupted by opportunity while in the R.A.F during WW2. His susceptibility to corruption was noted by the CIA during WW2 and marked him as a target for recruitment in order to act covertly on their behalf. After WW2, and while living in the city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Kern Jacobie made several unsuccessful attempts to start a business. Then, after a visit from an American operative with the CIA, Jacobie's new business servicing maritime shipping with corrosion resistant coatings suddenly takes off. The KGB gets involved when they realize not all is what it seems to be with Jacobie's company. Jacobie has his own interests to protect and decides to cooperate with MI5 and SIS to achieve his own particular priorities. Meanwhile, Daniel, Ken Jacobie's gender-conflicted son has long since moved on and undergone a gender modification operation, changed her name to Dolores and moved to Sydney, Australia. Jacobie's wife Maggie has also not looked back and has become a successful entrepreneur in the fashion industry with online and international brick-and-mortar outlets. The novel's theme carries the message that wartime hardships and setbacks can also lead to positive personal and spiritual growth as evidenced by Maggie and Dolores, while on the other hand, it may also lead to moral and ethical decay as evidenced in Jacobie.
