The best history yet written about the early US Navy

Mr. Fowler is a highly regarded historian and a skillful writer, and this is the best book about the early US Navy that I have yet found. It is a complex story but an important one, and it weaves together the many disparate aspects of the history in a way that gives you a complete picture of the era. Combined with his other book, Rebels Under Sail, about the American revolutionary navy, the picture one takes away is of a young nation struggling with basic questions of national sovereignty beyond the water's edge. A fascinating and strangely neglected aspect of our early national life.
