7-9 year olds - junior LGBT+ fiction. The book begins, with a mouse called Jack, who stumbles across an abandoned old wood, he soon see's the potential and begins to build a home, in one of many stumps that remain, utilising the things he finds, around the woods, he furnishes his home. Jack meets a mouse called Rob, falls in love and marries him; they have a family via a surrogate called Jen. Soon friends and relatives fall for the charm and tranquillity of the woods and move to live with Jack and Rob, each building a new home there, including Jane & Bess a lesbian family, Charlie and Sim a heterosexual family and many more. The book is a cacophony, of life events, of the mice in the woods and goes through each season of the year, as well as events, such as holidays, carnivals, weddings, sports days, a new church and school, Gay Pride and many more great adventures and exciting episodes. Concluding with the great fire, where the mice take refuge on the boat they make. A member of the BBC Children's department commented on the well-paced and gentle way this book was written and that they enjoyed following the different mice families across the seasons. They particularly admired my approach to clear, gentle writing with a lovely focus on community, kindness and working together to help support one another in times of need. (First edition)
