Published in 1899, the book is a collection of essays and critiques on various topics related to art, literature, music, and society. The book's title is a reference to the decadent and ornamental nature of the art and culture of the time, which Huneker compares to the exotic and extravagant animals of the jungle. The essays in the book cover a wide range of topics, from the works of famous artists and writers like Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe, to the state of contemporary music and the role of women in society.Huneker's writing style is characterized by his wit, humor, and sharp criticism, as he takes aim at the pretensions and excesses of the cultural elite.
