"It's Not So RUFF Being a Working Dog!" is an educational children's storybook about a German Shepherd service dog named Petey. Petey always loved helping others throughout his lifetime. Besides helping a woman who had a physical disability, Petey also helped to comfort others who were grieving or suffering some type of physical or emotional pain. Petey brings joy to readers by posing for colorful helping role pictures. At the end of the day Petey always says, "It's not so RUFF being a working dog! A dog has to do what a dog has to do." Christine Salamone wrote Petey's story as a tribute to him for always being there to help anybody, including herself. Many years ago, Christine saw how taking her previous dog, a therapy dog, dressed in different costumes made young patients cheerfully react when they saw him at St. Louis Children's Hospital and Ranken Jordan. Having smiles on their faces, the children seemed to cheer up and briefly forget about their illnesses when they spent time with her dog. Now, Christine and Petey have partnered to raise funds to help children and their families battling cancer and other illnesses. All proceeds, exceeding printing costs, will go directly to them. In addition, various organizations that provide services to children and their families will also benefit from the proceeds raised by this book.
