Why this book? The reason for my writing this book is to not only define what and how to look for the best possible IT experience, but to also help define how we need to provide IT to our own clients. The adage says, 'Treat others like you want to be treated'. So this book defines how I would want to be treated and how I want to have not just an IT provider, but a business partner I can grow with. A mutual win-win relationship I can trust to provide the right solutions that will help remove obstacles to scaling my business. As a business owner, I have two primary goals. First is to keep the client very happy - not just content - but extremely happy. The second is to do the same for my employees. Simply put, if the employees are happy, the customers will be happy, and the rest (such as profits) will fall into place. The other area a business owner needs to address is the concept of waste. Technology combined with good processes and policies can be an effective tool to minimize waste. For example, employees using company time browsing the internet is a commonly overlooked waste. Businesses should have a policy for computer usage, and fortunately, technology can enforce that policy for you! To show you how that adds up, one person paid $20 per hour just doing 30 minutes a day of non-work related browsing costs a business owner $2,600 per year - not even accounting for any amount the person could have been making for you if they were working! Multiply that by the number of users you have - and the results can be intimidating. Forbes once did a survey that revealed that 64 percent of employees visit non-work related websites every day at work. Of that group, 39 percent spend one hour or less per week, 29 percent spend 2 hours per week, 21 percent waste five hours per week, and 3 percent said they waste 10 hours or more! You can do the math. So start with good policies and processes, then apply technology to enforce policies and improve those processes. But remember, "Technology can only make bad policies and procedures run faster, not better" (tm) - Daniel Marcellus
