Good starter course.

It seems most of the other reviewers here are commenting on the condition their used copy arrived in rather than the quality of the instruction received from the book which is rather more helpful to someone thinking of picking up a copy. I felt that Italian without the Fuss was an enjoyable beginner's level course. The dialogues were fun and while much might be missed one the first pass, after you finish the associated chapter you should really be able to "get" that conversion - even if you don't understand each word. All in all, I would recommend this BUT there are other courses that are better, albeit much more expensive (think: Pimsluer).

Better than expected

For the $6 I spent on the book,I was worried it would be in tatters, but was pleased to see that it was in better shape than expected. All pages were clean and the cover was in good shape. Overall, I was very satisfied.

If a language teacher recommends the book, it has to be good

Although I only speak English, I purchased this book because my Italian language instructor highly recommended it. (She is an educator who teaches languages in grammar school.) I tried to listen to the CD almost every day for 4 months. (I don't learn languages easily - I guess it is age plus I am very left-brained.) I just returned from my trip to Italy (Tuscany region and Rome). I still cannot speak Italian in full sentences, but I was surprised at how much of the conversation I understood. Thank goodness I studied before the departure. Many of the people in the hill towns of Tuscany do not speak English. My favorite part was when they would send me over to talk to Giovanni (because he spoke English) and Giovanni would reply only in Italian. Learn how to understand directions! If you are going to be roaming around the hills of Tuscany, pack a flashlight and a good map too! The local gas station can provide you with a pianta della citta (a city map). Definitely study Italian before you go.
