It Wasn't Easy

In a few moments, gun in hand, Offie squeezed inside. He could hear Chico quite distinctly now. He sounded agitated and was talking loudly. Keeping his gun ready, Offie quietly tiptoed across the room until the man was in full view. He was holding the telephone in his left hand and a pistol in his right. With his gun pointed directly at the kidnapper, Offie said loudly, "Don't move, Sanchez!"Chico turned, bringing his gun around as he did so, and fired. Offie squeezed the trigger when he recognized the other's intent. The two gunshots were almost simultaneous, but not quite. Offie's was first by an instant. His bullet caught Sanchez in the left thigh. As Chico crumpled to the floor, the bullet from his gun slammed into the wall a full ten feet from where Offie stood.Offie was across the room in a moment. He picked up Chico's automatic and, after removing the clip, laid the gun on a table. Sanchez was moaning and cursing on the floor. "Just relax, Chico," Offie told him as he picked up the telephone the wounded man had dropped. As he brought the phone to his ear, he could hear Dennis shouting into the instrument, "What's going on in there? What's happening?-""Come on in," said Offie. He tossed the telephone aside and opened the front door. Then he picked up Chico's gun and went upstairs to look for Dennis's wife.Dennis Russell is a government bureaucrat on a cross-training mission. Offie Coker is a tough detective who is looking for the people who sold his nephew the drugs that killed him. Dennis soon learns what the real world of drug smuggling and illegal immigration is all about when he leaves his Washington office and spends some time in the middle of South Texas where Washington rules and regulations don't apply.
