We all know what domestic violence looks like in low socioeconomic areas. It is blatantly obvious. Did you know that domestic violence is growing rampantly in middle- and upper-class America? Did you know that it even exists? How could you? Families walk out of their little Eiffel towers looking amazingly normal and domesticated. Behind closed doors, a living hell may be in full operation? I am talking about domestic violence in the form of bullying, negating, ambivalence, detachment, and antisocial and aggressive sadistic behaviors. Once the abuser is confronted, the relationship is often ended and the abuser is off the hook. He goes along his merry little way with no consequences, and he ends up smelling like a rose. Also, once the abuser is confronted by his partner, he may be a serious physical threat to his victim. You see, I am one of the lucky ones. After months of healing, I managed to put myself back together and tell my story about domestic violence in our so-called civilized American society. I am here to tell you that living with daily verbal abuse is just as bad as, if not worse than, physical abuse. If someone hits you, you are obviously being abused. If someone beats you down day after day, it is like being in quicksand; before you know, it you are sunk. You are left with no spirit or soul. Domestic abuse in middle class society among the well-educated affluent is a travesty because the abuser knows better. I could not have survived without the grace of God, my almighty Father.
