The pencil rolled into a gap, and that's how it all began. Topplewick bent forward and found, behind the pencil, a booklet entitled ' Myths & Legends, Curated by Eadfrith of Lindisfarne, Early 8th Century.' Upon close inspection, he read, a ' Mysterious Isle, Northwest of the Mainland, and the Quest for Aenon's Mound. The source of magical, healing waters.' Knowing he was due for a holiday, the caretaker of the East Wing at Deanspike College requested that his leave be sanctioned as soon as possible. In the short time before he left, he realised only one island fit the description. Isle of Trant, situated eighteen miles off the mainland, covering an area of 47 square miles. There, he hoped to explore the tantalising facts he had read while in the college basement. However, Topplewick became besotted with Bethany. With her help and that of a young islander, he discovered the secrets of Aenon's Mound and the reason why the lanes and byways of the Isle were named Ripple Way, Waters End, Gushing Lane, and Waddle Passage. This was not the only discovery, as the islanders had never known the true meaning of the intricate designs woven into their traditional loom-spun jumpers. However, the greatest challenge facing the crofters was the extortionate threat from their absent mainland landlords to increase their rent, or could a certain Tax Inspector help? A story of love, deceit and fraudulent practices.
