Book 2 - An "island" a piece of land surrounded by water. By definition, an island is an isolated ecosystem that is dependent on the water that surrounds it. With so many diverse islands, the potential solution considerations are varied. For this book, the region of New Zealand and Pacific has been chosen because of its geographical proximity, its varied conditions and the connected history and cultural development. This book will expand on the concepts discussed in Book 1 and hopefully allow readers to further appreciate the differences between islands and the complexity of assessing the impacts of the different needs. These islands are affected by both local and global trends, particularly in regard to environment, economics and heritage / culture. The Pacific Ocean is the world's largest ocean and has a direct effect on five (5) of the world's continents. It has a dramatic effect on a large percentage of the world's weather and an indirect effect on much of the world's economy. The Pacific is also home to two (2) of the world's largest ocean Gyre's (Garbage patches). Too often their particular needs have not been widely considered - especially in regard to the smaller islands (eg Tuvalu which has recently been in the media). Many of these islands are also significantly impacted by remoteness and tourism. Why should we think about these specific issues - why do they matter? It is hoped that this book may provide an insight into the history of this region and therefore an understanding how sustainability has already developed over the centuries. Today, however, the region is largely, indirectly, affected by the actions of others around the globe. The diversity that has also developed across the region will also be explored to better understand how some of the various countries within the region have developed and how integration of sustainability has affected these areas. The philosophy of "STOP, THINK, CONSIDER, RETHINK, RECONSIDER AND IMPLEMENT then RETINK - AND - RECONSIDER REGULARLY TO SEEK THE BEST POSSIBLE OUTCOMES FOR ALL" is extremely relevant to many of these small countries. These areas also are particularly relevant to the development of the mottos to move development ahead: ALL LIVES MATTER ALL ENVIRONMENTS MATTER and Together change in attitudes is possible. Change is always occurring, and there must be hope.
