Islands Book 1: sustainability

Humanity doesn't always get it right in regard to Sustainability, but the challenge is to acknowledge the past and learn from and mistakes and errors and construct a better present and plan for a sustainable future. An "island" is a piece of land surrounded by water. By definition, an island is also an isolated ecosystem that is dependent on the waters that surrounds it. Due to the number of islands that can be reviewed and the variance across the global in such islands, each very different and each with its own unique issues and potential solutions, these books have been divided into 2 geographic regions. This book will deal with islands in Asia and Australia, whilst book 2 will deal with New Zealand and the Pacific. The islands range from tiny islands as well as an entire continent - that's right - Australia is a continent and an island. Within this region, there are also groups of islands which make up nations, with Indonesia being one of the largest archipelagos - with some 17,000 individual islands. Based on these specific differences, "islands" were chosen for these reviews into "sustainability" because of their unique properties. These islands are affected by both local and global trends, particularly in regard to environment, economics and heritage / culture. Too often, their particular needs have not been widely considered - especially in regard to the smaller islands. Many of these islands are also significantly impacted by remoteness and tourism. Unfortunately, much of these cultures and heritages have not always been "Sustainable". For example, Australia's past has included a number of racial factors including "Sugar Slaves" and the "Stolen Generation", and in Indonesia, issues relating to environmental management have been factors in their drive for sustainability. These challenges have provided examples for this review as to how all can learn from the past, to consider the present and plan for the future. In recent times, a number of these past issues have emerged as "present issues" with issues relating to race and environment being openly discussed and debated. Global issues are affecting these areas - the same areas many of us go to for the enjoyment of the natural beauty, the peace and harmony. Why should we think about these specific issues -why do they matter? Each of these selected regions have extensive cultural and heritage traditions. In this book, the philosophy of "STOP, THINK, CONSIDER, RETHINK, RECONSIDER AND IMPLEMENT then RETINK - AND - RECONSIDER REGULARLY TO SEEK THE BEST POSSIBLE OUTCOMES FOR ALL" will be explored. Together change in attitudes is possible. Change is always occurring, and there must be hope. the motto to move forward needs to also include: ALL LIFE MATTERS / ALL ENVIRONMENTS MATTER
