Our plan was to arrange some accommodation for a couple of nights in Bangkok, just so that we could get over the long flight and decide where we wanted to go. We had a vague idea that we would like to go island hopping up the southwest coast, breaking new ground and exploring places neither of us had been. It would mean finding and booking accommodations as we went, staying in each place until we felt the urge to move on, then figuring out how to get from one place to the next. It would be an exciting adventure, or so we hoped. I have devoted a chapter to each of the locations we visited, trying to give a true flavour the areas, the places we stayed and the means of transport we used. Alongside that I have tried to point out some of the strange and uniquely intriguing aspects of this fascinating country, explaining them where possible, whilst acknowledging their humorous and sometimes contradictory nature. It is a great privilege for me to be your guide through this adventure and my hope is to entertain you, perhaps even to, in some small way, inform you as to the weird and wonderful culture that makes this country so very special. Even after so many visits, my own understanding, as a pharang (non-Asian), is still woefully incomplete, but perhaps it might be sufficient to whet your appetite and make you hungry to know more. At the very least, I hope you enjoy reading it. Thank you.
