Probably one of the most common set of questions I hear as a Bible teacher concerns Islam. In today's world, the unceasing conflicts between Christians, Jews, and Muslims makes understanding Islam more necessary than ever - not only to try to make sense out of the day's headlines, but to help Christians fulfill the Great Commission by offering the Gospel to Muslim friends and neighbors. Muslims are, generally, very motivated to seek God's will and do it. Unfortunately, when searching the pages of the Quran, they are looking for Him in the wrong place. I know, because I spent years, before coming to Christ, striving and studying to become a Muslim. What stopped me? The contradictions of the Quran. The moral flaws in the life of Muhammad, who, it seemed, was not the perfect example to humanity that Jesus was in fact. And what also stopped me was the absence of the living God in Islam. As an aspiring Muslim, I felt like a man picking up a phone that had no dial tone. When I sincerely gave myself to Christ, that dial tone came on, and the voice of God rang loud and true in my soul. Most Christians that I have observed trying to witness to Muslims have odd and even offensive preconceptions about Islamic culture, and that prevents them from being effective. To speak meaningfully with Muslims, it is important to understand who they really are and what their religion really teaches, and then, of course, to witness to them, as the Apostle Peter wrote, with gentleness and respect. I have known many Muslims who could not accept my beliefs, just as I could not accept theirs. But because we understood each other, we could remain friends. And I have seen Muslims engage with Christians openly, in an atmosphere of intelligent fellowship, who perceived the truth in Christ and became evangelists of deep conviction and great effect.
