Ideological factors - in this case, religious ones - have a considerable impact. They legitimise actions, allegiances and alliances, but the crisis discussed in this paper has very complex origins, which are not limited to ideological factors; political, economic and geopolitical factors also add fuel to the fire of war. 'Islamic State', as we have known it in recent years, did not fall from the sky; but is the culmination of a historical process that various regional and international powers have fuelled in one way or another. Consequently, no real solution is possible or conceivable without genuine political will on the part of the various stakeholders - something that is not easy to achieve, given the interests of the supposed saviours. Only a genuine democracy, giving a voice to the peoples of the region and to their aspirations for freedom and social justice, can put an end to the fanatics and their financial backers.
