Is There Not a Cause?: Where There Is No Crisis, the Church Is Still Left With a Mission

By Dr Charles E Rodgers

For generations, the Black church stood as the heartbeat of a people a sanctuary of courage, a cradle of resistance, a voice that thundered against injustice when the world refused to listen. But somewhere between the victories of the past and the crises of the present, something shifted. The pulpits grew quieter. The streets grew louder. And a question that once stirred prophets and freedom fighters alike now echoes across a wounded nation: What happened to the church that once changed the world?

In this bold and deeply personal work, Dr. Rodgers leads readers on a journey through history, Scripture, and lived experience to confront the uncomfortable truth that the greatest threat to the Black church is not external opposition, but internal silence. With the conviction of a prophet and the vulnerability of a pastor, he exposes the fractures that have weakened the church's witness and calls for a return to the courage that once defined its identity.

Drawing from the story of David facing Goliath, the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, and the painful realities of modern injustice from police violence to voter suppression this book challenges the church to reclaim its prophetic mantle. It is a summons to step into the valley when others remain on the hillside, to speak when silence feels safer, to stand when standing is costly, and to remember that the gospel is not passive, neutral, or silent.

This is not a eulogy for the Black church. It is a call to resurrection.

It is a reminder that GOD is not finished with HIS people. It is a charge to rise again with conviction, unity, and holy boldness. It is an invitation to believe that the same GOD who delivered before will deliver again.

For every pastor, believer, activist, and seeker longing for a church that looks like JESUS and lives like justice this book is your summons.

The cause is before us. The moment is now. And the church must answer.
