Is Janie Here?

An eight-year-old boy named Leonard appears at the door of a little girl and asks, "Is Janie here?" Her father doesn't like what he sees, and a contest of wills develops. As time passes, Janie blossoms from a plain, freckled girl with red hair and a scab on her knee, and Leonard is increasingly captivated. A thuggish older boy named Tony is watching Janie, too, and his unhealthy interest threatens her. Leonard and his pal Mitch explore the limits of youthful risk and adventure. Leonard's devotion to Janie is tested by a girl named Honey-Pie, and he is troubled by his grades, his inability to dance and his father's insistence that he get a job and "learn how to work." He wonders how he will defend Janie's honor and his own in the inevitable confrontation with Tony. Through it all, Leonard and Janie plan for the day when they will be together forever.An occasionally serious study of family and friendship, conflict, and the enduring nature of young love.
