Monty Berger was the first RCAF ground officer to land on the beaches of Normandy on June 7, 1944, washing ashore at dawn of D-Day+1. Invasions Without Tears, based on a manuscript Mr. Berger wrote 50 years ago, gives us a personal account, both in the air and on the ground, of what life was like with 126 Wing, one of the most formidable fighting forces of World War II.
This book is quite informative in that it gives one a better perspective on the workings of a Canadian fighter wing in the European Air War, and just what a price that Canadians paid in their contribution to the demise of the Luftwaffe. If I remember correctly, the turn-over rate for pilots with this wing was well over 100% from the time the unit arrived in France (a few days following D-Day) until the end of the war. A contribution worth remembering, thus a book that should be read.
Often overlooked, Canadian pilots scored big!!

The story of the 126 RCAF Spitfire Wing as told by its Senior Intelligence Officer. As the inside sleeve boldly proclaims: "From its formation as 126 Airfield in Redhill, Surrey, in July 1943, to VE-Day almost two years later, 126 Wing scored more victories than any other Allied air force, and its pilots were among the war's most decorated."
