Great story! Worth the effort to find and read again

I first picked this book up in an airport newsstand when I was in high school in the early 1980's. I enjoyed it tremendously then but made the fatal error of loaning it to a friend and never got it back. The quality of the story and writing has stuck with through the years and I'm anxiously awaiting my used copy I purchased to enjoy this book again. It's not being lent out a second time. Twenty-plus years is too long to wait again for a book this good.

One of the best ever!

I have read this book many times since I first purchased as a young PFC in the Marines. I have always hoped for a sequel or a movie...just a fantastic read with no plot holes usually found in this genre.

hunt this one down--you will love it

This is one of the most undersung science fiction novels of the recent era. It begs to be made into a movie. Very carefully crafted, enjoyable and swiftly moving read. The authors really thought their plot through carefully.Ostensibly just another alien invasion story; the book has great dramatic overtones and a narrative structure that is more like a mainstream novel. There are lots of action and thrills too--the beginning of the book details a group of air force scientists gradually unravelling a pattern to UFO sightings. U.S. military jets clash with UFOs--great stuff!There is wonderful intelligence in the way the sequence of new UFO sightings unfolds into a much grander dilemma: what would we do if we discovered an alien armada was slowly approaching earth? Describing how the advanced & technological nations of the world must, (in the face of imminent annhiliation) put aside their political differences and unite to create a massive energy weapon is simply, superb.The pacing and more importantly, the *logic* of the plot never falters. Its all very convincing and credible; no cliches but a lot of creativity. Everything a good sci-fi novel should be.The story has a killer twist at the conclusion, something to really make you pause and reflect. This little work cant be forgotten, once read. I highly recommend it.

A good read.

I highly recommend this book for scince fiction fans and ufo buffs alike. The reason the ufos are here is finnally revieled as the begin to attack passenger jets,nuclear power plants and military targets.The big nations of the world unite to build a gaint graser a laser that is the only thing that can stop the aliens.
