Biblical backgrounds provide context for the text.

Critics who claim that an eye for an eye is an example of biblical barbarism refuse to read the line in context. Other law codes allowed an avenger to put out both eyes for the loss of one or knock out five teeth for the loss of one. In context, the Old Testament Law is not a prescription for justice but a limitation on vengeance. The Old Testament Law is not an example of biblical barbarism but a giant step away from pagan barbarism. Archaeology provides context for the text.

Biblical backgrounds is a catch-all study, a survey of surveys. It is a survey of the archaeology, geography, culture, customs, and history that form the background of the biblical world. This background helps us understand the text in its context.

From time to time, I will share how I decide among options. I pray that my struggles will encourage you to struggle and gain intuitive insight into scripture and the biblical world. Then, as discoveries are made, you will be able to evaluate those discoveries.
