Around one hundred years ago in a small rural village in Poland, my great, great grandmother Rivka struggled to provide a good life for her children in a country that was increasingly hostile toward Jews. One of her daughters, Pearl (my great grandmother), fell in love and married a man who had dreams of leaving Poland and becoming a citizen of the United States. They had two daughters; Elka, the eldest, was my mother's mother. This is Pearl's story, and the story of how the lives of generations of women are interwoven, despite the flimsy barrier of time. This is the story of mothers and daughters facing some of the same challenges in different generations and in different settings.
