Interview With MAJ Danford Bryant

MAJ Danford Bryant served as a team lead of a Civil Affairs (CA) operation in N'Djamena, Chad during 2007-2008 and as company commander of six CA teams spread out across Africa during 2009 and 2010 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom Trans Sahara (OEF-TS). In this February 2011 interview, MAJ Bryant discusses preparation for his deployment to Chad as team lead for a unique mission, the challenges of working in that environment, and the changes for the better he noticed between his return from that deployment and his time as a company commander, particularly with regard to chain of command issues. MAJ Bryant concludes his interview with the observation, "When our footprint in Iraq is dramatically reduced and the same in Afghanistan, our missions in the world are going to be a lot more focused in countries where there is no conflict ongoing. The individual in charge is going to be the ambassador and Department of State. It doesn't matter if you're deploying to those countries working for a combatant commander and a four-star general sends you there to execute a mission; you're not doing anything in those countries without an ambassador's approval. I think it's critical that our leadership -- and by leadership I mean everyone from sergeant, up -- understands what it's like to work in an embassy environment."
