People acquire a new language more easily in an environment that is relaxed and natural. Through my years of teaching, I've found that folktales help to create that kind of atmosphere in the classroom-they can help reduce learner anxiety and encourage communication that is spontaneous and authentic. They make us laugh, remind us of our childhoods, exemplify how much people have in common, even if we come from different parts of the world, and return us to a simpler time in history, when our ancestors created these stories to entertain and to teach.
