I've had a chance to review some portions of this book, and find it an excellent review of history and workings of cooperative movements worldwide. I was looking for dimensions of Japan, and found some good material with an ample bibliograpy. My additional interest in the American and UK accounts were not disappointed. There is more, with discussions of the situations in Africa, for example. I have seen a report authored by Birchall at the UN COPAC website. I did not find much consideration of theoretical perspectives, which are better discussed in works of Herman Daly and David Ellerman, and papers by Ann Milford held at the Fair Trade Labelling Organization. William Greider's The Soul of Capitalism is an excellent contemporary survey and extremely readable, while Mark Lutz's Economics for the Common Good is a more academic survey, and very good to probe theory.
