Early birds and night owls are born, not made. Sleep patterns are the most obvious manifestation of the highly individualized biological clocks we inherit, but these clocks also regulate bodily functions from digestion to hormone levels to cognition. By understanding and respecting our internal time, we can live better.
I was hoping for a list of things to help my find my best schedule, but no such luck. It's a short read, with 24 chapters that each feature a short story followed by research about the topic, but the stories were more distracting than anything. They also seemed to contradict each other. One section is about how you can vary your chronotype a bit with training, but not really that much, then another story has a character that completely reverses his by working indoors. For more practical applications, try Satchin Panda's "The Circadian Code" or Daniel Pink's "When." I'm hoping it'll make more sense on a second read-through, but I'm not super excited to try.
