Travel back to the 1960s and walk the halls of Chicago's Cook County Hospital with Douglas R. Gracey, a medical intern eager to learn the ways of medicine, help patients and impress his colleagues.... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This is a delightful reminiscence of the author's baptism into clinical medicine -- his year of internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago almost 50 years ago. I was there 40 years ago and everything Dr. Gracey writes rang true. It's an easy read. It covers some very serious topics and some hilarious ones, all related with grace and insight. Interestingly the book was given to me from a patient. I've shared it with other physicians and family members and I think everyone has enjoyed it as much as I did. I certainly think all young doctors should read it for the insight into how far we've come technologically from just 50 years ago but, probably more importantly, for the humanity expressed by Dr. Gracey.
