Intermontane Basin Extension & Volcanism During Miocene Times started out as research into the Owyhee Province in Southeastern Oregon beginning with the Oregon-Idaho graben, a failed rift zone. The research then extended into the Nevada Rift, the Yellowstone hot spot track, the Columbia River Basalt plume, back arc extension of the Basin and Range, and finally ending with plate rotation occurring in the Pacific Northwest. Each topic was presented as a separate issue in this book although all of these Miocene events occurred simaltaneously. The book was divided into eight chapters.Chapter 1 starts the discussion off with the Oregon-Idaho graben, graben development, volcanism, and stages of graben evolution. Chapter 2 continued the Oregon-Idaho graben into the Nevada Rift which occupied the eastern margin of the graben. Chapter 3 continued the saga with the Yellowstone hot spot track which was initiated in the Nevada Rift. Chapter 4 discussed the Columbia River Basalt plume with passive and active mantle melting models. Chapter 5 shifted the discussion into the Basin and Range Province extension and the Yellowstone hot spot influences in Nevada. Chapter 6 continued the treatment of back arc extension in the Southeastern Oregon Basin and Range Province. Chapter 7 led the research into the Warner Range and Walker Lane extensional history in Northeastern California. Chapter 8 ended the story with plate rotation of the Pacific Northwest.
