This study analyses the implementation of the Mais Educa o programme in the municipality of Maric (RJ) in 2011. Particular attention is given to the fact that the programme was an initiative of the Ministry of Education, formulated with the participation of public universities and other government agencies, as well as civil society organisations, generally linked to business groups, with the aim of developing, in accordance with educational policy, full-time comprehensive education in some Brazilian public schools; and the implementation of the programme in public schools in the municipal education network of the city of Maric in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It concludes that the programme's proposal has a negative impact on the process of universalising Brazilian public education, as it is at odds with the most urgent demands of this institution, something that was verified in the schools studied.
